Amylase is een enzym dat koolhydraten afbreekt in kleinere suikers zoals glucose, en speelt een rol in de vertering. Het wordt aangemaakt door speekselklieren en de alvleesklier en begint zijn werk in de mond.

Amylase is een enzym dat helpt bij de afbraak van zetmeel en glycogeen in kleinere suikers, zoals maltose en glucose. Het speelt een belangrijke rol in de vertering van koolhydraten en maakt deze beter toegankelijk voor het lichaam.

Amylase wordt van nature aangemaakt door zowel de speekselklieren als de alvleesklier. Het begint zijn werk al in de mond, waar het bijdraagt aan de afbraak van koolhydraten terwijl je kauwt. Vervolgens neemt de alvleesklier het over, waarbij het enzym verder werkt in de dunne darm om koolhydraten verder af te breken.

Amylase wordt vaak toegevoegd aan spijsverteringssupplementen om de afbraak van koolhydraten te ondersteunen. Deze supplementen bevatten meestal een combinatie van verschillende spijsverteringsenzymen, waaronder protease en lipase, om de vertering van verschillende voedingsstoffen te bevorderen.

Er zijn twee belangrijke typen amylase: speekselamylase (alfa-amylase), dat wordt geproduceerd in de speekselklieren, en pancreasamylase, dat door de alvleesklier wordt aangemaakt.
