Lactobacillus rhamnosus is een type bacterie dat valt onder de melkzuurbacteriën. Deze komt van nature voor in het menselijk lichaam, vooral in de darmen. Het wordt beschouwd als een "vriendelijke" bacterie die een rol kan spelen in het verteren van lactose en het produceren van melkzuur.

Je kunt Lactobacillus rhamnosus van nature in je spijsverteringsstelsel vinden. Daarnaast is het aanwezig in een aantal gefermenteerde voedingsmiddelen, zoals bepaalde yoghurtsoorten en kefir. In supplementvorm komt deze bacterie ook vaak voor, al dan niet in combinatie met andere probiotica.

Er zijn verschillende stammen binnen de groep van Lactobacillus-bacteriën, zoals Lactobacillus acidophilus en Lactobacillus casei. Elke stam heeft zijn eigen kenmerken en eigenschappen. Lactobacillus rhamnosus heeft specifieke eigenschappen die van belang zijn in onderzoeken naar darmbacteriën.

Probiotische supplementen kunnen een enkele bacteriestam bevatten, zoals alleen Lactobacillus rhamnosus, of een combinatie van meerdere stammen. Multistam-probiotica worden soms gekozen omdat ze een breder spectrum aan bacteriën aan de darmflora kunnen toevoegen. Welke vorm het beste voor jou is, kan variëren afhankelijk van persoonlijke voorkeur en behoeften.

Prebiotica zijn voedingsstoffen die de groei van probiotische bacteriën zoals Lactobacillus rhamnosus kunnen ondersteunen. Sommige probiotica bevatten ook prebiotica, die als het ware als voeding dienen voor probiotica. Dit type product wordt vaak aangeduid als een synbioticum. Prebiotica zijn echter niet per se nodig voor het gebruik van probiotica, maar kunnen wel een nuttige toevoeging zijn.
